Patrick Leigh Fermor’s Travels 1933 – 1937
I had never heard of Patrick Leigh Fermor until Chat GPT responded with his name when I asked for its help in finding a traveler who had walked through Europe. And I was bowled over by Paddy’s eloquence and incredible erudition. And he was only 17 on his departure, whilst I am…a lot older! Just as he had chatted with everyone, no matter their class, gender or age, who had crossed his path, I thought to do the same. Our worlds had obviously physically changed dramatically (like Irongate Wharf!) but how about the people, their political and cultural beliefs? He was walking and I am on Interrail, but I will seek to discover how these have changed in nearly a century!
However:
Due to many factors, such as a limited budget, accommodation costs in Western Europe as well as the time factor – my Interrail pass is for 2 months and I would like to get as far as possible, I have decided to do the journey backwards. But I will still relate the experience to “A time of Gifts”. I’m sure the purists might challenge this but I believe that I will still gain from the experience.
